Yogic tips to positively impact our wellbeing
What is a CHAKRA? A chakra is a sanskrit word meaning "wheel" and chakras are a very important part of our subtle or energy body.
If the Yamas were all about putting our foot on the brake pedal then the Niyamas are about putting our foot on the accelerator!
The first of the Niyamas is Saucha, meaning purity or cleanliness. This refers to both the body and the mind.
Keeping the body clean is not simply about washing thoroughly every day, it also involves taking exercise and ‘eating clean’. Obviously our yoga movements and sequences help to remove blockages and to keep the body in good condition. Getting out in the fresh air helps to purify our lungs, our blood and all our internal systems.
Let’s start at the very beginning...Patanjali was a wise dude who lived in India a long time ago and who knew a lot about yoga! He passed on his wisdom through his Yoga Sutras. A sutra is a useful device, a short burst of words which is able to convey an awful lot to the listener or reader. He also usefully put together a simple structure for those of us on our yogic path which we call the Eight Limbs of Yoga:
Vishuddhi, the throat chakra, located within the neck and expanding down towards the shoulders and up into the area of the mouth and lower part of the face... its sanskrit translation: visha = impurity, poison suddhi = purify
‘It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold... when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade.' Charles Dickens
As I reflect upon the experiences and lessons learned from the past year and prepare for new year and it's opportunities, I like to create a vision board to help me focus and create direction in my life...
I first read about vision boards in a book called ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne and I have adapted that process to produce a succession of digital visions over the last few years which can either be printed out and pinned up on the wall or which can be created as a wallpaper on various devices.
A technique that has helped me personally is what I would call, in layman’s terms, The Chosen Word Strategy. And what do I mean by that? What is the chosen word? A chosen word can be a syllable, a word, a sentence that you use to consciously interject into your mind and it is a way of disciplining your mind.
What sort of word would that be? Like ‘Love’, ‘Joy’, ‘Peace’ and you could also use words that help you to connect with the highest. For some it would be Christ, Allah, the name of Krishna, Mahavira, Buddha, Jehova, and so on.
