Dru Dance

What is Dru Dance?

Passionate about dance and yoga? Dru Dance is just what you're looking for! Dru Dance is a fusion of yoga and dance moves choreographed to music. It's stress-busting and energetic and focuses on dynamic, flowing movement to create both strength and suppleness.

A regular practice of Dru Dance improves your flexibility, muscle tone and core stability as well as making you more alert, energetic and improving your concentration.

Dru Dance takes many different forms of beautiful flowing yoga movement set to music:

  1. Dru Yoga Dance Forms (DYDF): strong, dynamic forms choreographed precisely to a specific piece of music.
  2. Dru Flow (DF): sequences set to music, but the pace can vary as the choreography is not specific to particular lyrics.
  3. Dru Meditative Sequences (DMS): slower pace, symbolic, contemplative.
  4. Free Creative Forms (FCF): in the infinite joy of creative movement anyone can create different sequences which as practitioners of Dru Yoga they may call Dru Dance. However, sequences that do not originate from the International School of Dru Yoga may not meet with the creative or energetic flow and standards required by Dru International. Please do check the origin of sequences that you may learn.

A little more about Dru Dance

Would you like to know a more about Dru Dance before trying it out? Here are the principles we've based it on:

POETRY IN MOTION
Dru Yoga Dance makes a statement. It says more than can be communicated in words. The movements are ‘bold’ and ‘tender’, ‘loud’ and ‘quiet’.

CORE STRENGTH
The stability gained from strong, balanced core muscles is essential for the safe practice of Dru Yoga Dance. We apply the principles of core stability throughout our practice.

GRAVITY & GRACE / WEIGHT & WEIGHTLESSNESS
We learn to understand the dance between gravity and grace. We recognise that which draws our centre of gravity down to a stable place, an anchored energy and that which elevates us.

In Dru Yoga Dance we feel and experience the powerful effects of gravity. We learn to harness gravity for our own empowerment, discovering a sense of stability and strength. This contrasts with the qualities of lightness, weightlessness, and effortless movement when the body moves easily and without constraint.

STRENGTH & SOFTNESS
We learn to use our body to evoke the specific mood and qualities that the dance is aiming to express. This is achieved both as a strong physical form, with healthy muscle tone that expresses itself through the movements, and as an emotive form of communicating softness, when the movements are soft and tender.

CONTRAST
Dru Yoga Dance uses the power of contrast through applying the above principles to create a visually rich experience. It also invites the practitioner into their own experience through evoking the mood and qualities of the dance.

FLOW
An essential principal of Dru Yoga Dance is the smooth flow of movements from one to another. This is achieved by using ‘transition movements’ which link the main moves of each dance easily and smoothly. The transition moves support the dancer’s experience of flow and create visually pleasing, seamless movement.
