What is Ayurveda
'Ayur' means 'life' and 'Veda' means 'knowledge'. Therefore Ayurveda means 'the science of life' (Charaka Samhita).
Ayurveda is a 6000 year old therapeutic system that aims to maintain the health of body, mind and spirit.
Ayurveda shows us that the natural elements—such as the warmth and light of the sun, the air we breathe, and the mineral and plant substances—have an immense therapeutic value. Intelligent use of these gifts of nature, combined with a wholesome diet and a positive mindset, contribute to a healthy and fulfilling life.
About Ayurvedic massage
Ayurveda massage is one of the many pillars of Ayurveda. It is designed to help restore and maintain balance in both body and mind. Over the first module you will discover this gentle, rhythmic massage using a variety of techniques (full body front and full body back) to stimulate and enhance skin tone, detoxify and revitalise the entire body and induce deep relaxation. It uses warm herb-infused oils specifically tailored to individual needs. The combination of herbal oils and gentle warmth makes the massage a deeply restful and rejuvenating experience.
Through Ayurveda massage the herbs in the oils are taken directly into the body in a powerful and relaxing way. The time needed for the oil to be absorbed is given as one 'Matra' which equals approximately three seconds - or the time it takes to blink an eyelid (The essence of Ayurveda by Dr Sanjay Pisharadi).
In Ayurvedic massage, natural herbal oils and powders are applied to the body using a variety of specific techniques. Oils and treatment methods are chosen especially to suit the client’s constitution and skin type, enabling the client to maintain vibrant health and encourage deep healing.

What will I learn
- the history and philosophy of ayurveda
- the elements, the doshas and the effect of their balance and imbalance
- the correct way to take a case history to determine your client’s predominant dosha
- the selection of the proper ayurvedic massage oils for your client
- the correct positioning of your client
- a variety of massage strokes and techniques of warm oil application to the body
- ‘hands on’ practice with course participants and staff to ensure correct massage technique
- full body abhyanga
- Keralan honouring technique (given before each massage)
- traditional Keralan face-lift massage
- Keralan head massage
- Marma point back massage
The course is fully accredited with the CMA (Complementary Medical Association). As you qualify on each massage through the course you will be able to get insurance and start offering treatments straight away.
The way it works
On each module you will learn a different type of ayurvedic massage, between the modules you are encouraged to practice that particular massage at least 6 times and then if you want to be assessed and qualify in that massage you send in your case study forms.
